Each of the festival’s films conveys a deep respect and appreciation for the world’s oceans and the creatures that call them home. This program includes 7 short films.

TIGER (SHARK) KING MEXICO, 5 mins Film maker: Clayton Conn More than 20 years ago conservationist and diver, Jim Abernethy, discovered the “affectionate” side of large predatory sharks after removing a fishing hook from the jaws of a tiger shark. Since then he has removed thousands of hooks from sharks in the warm, clear waters off the Bahamas and has brought divers to safely encounter these apex predators with the goal of destigmatising sharks as mindless killers.

EYRE & SEA AUSTRALIA, 18 mins Film maker: Jem Cresswell On the edge of the Great Australian Bight, a wild place where vast desert spills into roaring ocean, weather is king. A pristine environment supporting a unique array of wildlife, including the endangered Australian sea lion. Here, in a town with a population of 3, lives Alan. In a life shaped around the natural world, an unlikely relationship with a colony of pinnipeds, has fundamentally changed him.

IF YOU GIVE A BEACH A BOTTLE USA, 4 mins Filmmaker: Max Romey Inspired by a picture book, Max Romey heads to a remote beach on Alaska’s coastline in search of marine debris. What he finds is a different story altogether.

WAVE OF CHANGE France, 39 mins Film makers: Damien Castera & Pierre Frechou “Nomade des Mers,” a catamaran currently sailing around the world in search of low-tech innovation, pioneering the development of sustainable and affordable technologies. Captained by Corentin de Chatelperron from the film Gold of Bengal, Wave of Change documents his ongoing quest for a sustainable life and a life at sea. This low-tech surfing adventure shares a unique way to chase waves with minimal impact. NORMAL GUYS (custom tour edit) Poland, 40 mins Filmmaker: Łukasz Adam Kamiński Adam Hamerlik and Piotr Poprawski decided to cross the Atlantic Ocean. On a five-meter long, self-built yacht. Without any outside support. Without weather information. Without contact with the land. It probably wouldn’t be surprising if they were sailors or shipwrights. But the idea of sailing over 3 thousand nautical miles was born in the heads of middle-aged corporate workers from Warsaw… The film tells the story of two sailors-amateurs’, who sick of routine and driven by their love of water – decided to go on the adventure of a lifetime.

I AM OCEAN: PT HIRSCHFIELD AUSTRALIA, 9 mins Film maker: Samuel Riley A photographer diagnosed with a terminal illness finds refuge, recovery and a renewed lease on life through her connection with the ocean.

MAR (custom tour edit) Portugal, 25 mins Filmmaker: Olaf Crato Big Wave Surfer Alex Botelho lives in a corner of the world that has a very direct connection to the ocean. We go on a journey to discover what drives him into the world’s biggest waves and how he remains true to his roots.
